Broadly speaking, Thomas Stapleford is interested in the allure and limits of using rules and algorithms to govern human behavior. His core historical research has explored the collection and use of quantitative data by the state, academic social scientists, business, and organized labor. He's currently completing a book that uses virtue ethics to think about how to integrate expertise with democratic governance, and he has several ongoing projects that explore the relevance of virtue ethics to science and technology.
