A key concern related to technology is the impact on the labor market—that is, whether new technologies will replace workers and create adverse labor market consequences. In this paper, the authors examine the impact of robot adoption on local employment in the United States between 2005 and 2016. They do find that robots initially replaced jobs in the earlier periods, but that effect reverses, with the authors finding evidence of robots augmenting local labor. They find that this reversal was primarily driven by the automotive sector in the United States during this period.
