Research Interests: The nature of trust, personhood and essentialism, diachronic rationality, the good life

Sullivan leads a research group—the Engaged Philosophy Group—that works to connect cutting-edge research in ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology to timely debates about human flourishing. This work includes the God and the Good Life Program at Notre Dame and several major external research grants.

Sullivan also directs the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study, a University-wide institute that convenes an interdisciplinary group of faculty fellows, external and internal, and top Ph.D. and undergraduate students each year to study questions that require a joint focus, benefit from sustained research, and advance understanding of core issues that affect our ability to lead valuable, meaningful lives.
